LIKE RAIN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

As the saying goes, "It's good luck to have rain on your wedding day."

Superstitious, perhaps, but I think the true indicator of luck for a marriage rests in the two issues that rain presents:

1.  How prepared are you for inclement weather? and 2. If it does rain on your wedding day, how do you react.

There's also a third aspect.  Does the sun shine on your wedding day?

Brian and Annette were not only prepared for the rain on their March 17th wedding at Nestledown in Los Gatos, California, they were unphased by the drenching downpour on the morning of their wedding.  This aspect only added to the beauty of the day and allowed Annette to display the whimsical side of her beauty.

The truth is that about 20 minutes before the ceremony, the sun came out and began to shine through the gorgeous coastal fog.

Emmanuel & Liezel's Engagement

Wedding season is upon us.  Konstantine & I spent Saturday's golden hour with an adorable couple whose wedding we will be shooting in June.

Leizel and Emmanuel were playful and romantic and open to ideas which included walking on rickety planks at one of my favorite secret sights for light in San Mateo, California on the bay.

A great surprise to us all was an abundance of lady bugs in the grass.  When is the last time you held a lady bug in your hands?

Thank you, Emmanuel & Liezel for sharing these moments with us!

Yortoise

Groom Brian Ouellette and his ring-bearer, Yortoise the leopard tortoise.

Meet the ring-bearer for Brian and Annette's wedding, Yortoise. Yortoise is a 10-year-old leopard tortoise who loves lettuce, cucumbers, watermelon, sun, heat, soccer balls and female tortoises.  Brian rescued Yortoise from a church in Oregon about 8 years ago.  Tortoises are "solar powered" according to Brian and don't much take to the Oregon Climate.  California would make a better home.

Brian drove up from San Diego to retrieve Yortoise in a beat-up old Ford sedan.  This was shortly after he and Annette had started dating and Annette was excited to meet the tortiose.  Yortiose was 2 years old and the size of a soft-ball.

Yortoise runs the house, is attached to a certain soccer ball and, sleeps on his food and rushes to the door when Brian comes home from work.  We were all enchanted by the little guy who actually posed for the camera a couple of times. The rings were placed in a gorgeous rustic wooden box and strapped to Yorrtoise's back with a leather belt.

Taxi at Nestledown

Annette and father in a Vintage Austin Healy Taxi on the way to the ceremony at Nestledown on  a rainy St. Patrick's Day.  The rain only made this wedding that much more interesting and ethereal.

Imagine what Annette must be thinking.

The Bride's House

Annette is gorgeous, without make-up.  Described in speeches at the wedding as a "tomboy", I could not imagine her ever being described as such.  As you can see, she needs no make-up, but when you see the transformation, you'll see that she is poised regardless of the situation.

The ritual of getting ready can be a joyful preparation for a bride.  Annette takes languorous pleasure in applying her lipstick, putting on her earrings and enjoying the moments before the wedding instead of rushing through.  You can see her savor the moments and collect her thoughts.

Annette's dress is corseted with a long sash ribbon in back.  This detail, you will see later in the dance sequence of this blog, adds a perfect touch.  The back of a wedding gown is as important as the front.  Annette chose well!

I love the grainy character of Richard Avedon's black-and-white photographs.  This style does not flatter every subject, but in many of these takes, Annette reminds me of Avedon's Twiggy or even earlier shots Brigitte Bardot. (below)

Brian & Annette

Wedding of Brian Ouelette and Annette Bettencourt at Nestledown

in

Los Gatos, CA, March 17th, 2012.

This is the first of many pages in our blog featuring the wedding of Brian Ouellette & Annette Bettencourt on March 17th, 2012 at Nestledown in Los Gatos, California on a beautiful rainy spring day.

The rain only added to the intrigue of the arresting redwooded estate in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

There were many interesting details about this wedding including Yortoise, Brian & Annette's pet rescue tortoise that served as their ring-bearer, Annette's chartreuse rain boots and the Portuguese Father-Daughter dance that was the absolute most remarkable dance I've ever seen at a wedding.

Annette comes from a very large family and they are prolific with beautiful and engaging children.  You will see photos of children suspended in mid-air during dance, children reaching into the sky for bubbles and children laughing and revealing their purity to our cameras.
